Central America’s Electricity network will connect countries by next year
Most Central American countries will be connected to the new electricity network by the end of 2011. The electricity sector’s authorities have put together a series of concrete actions that should make the regional market a reality by the next year
The Inter-American Development Bank organized a meeting where Central America´s representatives as energy ministers
reaffirmed their commitment to speeding up the process of harmonizing the region’s legal frameworks in order to achieve energy integration.
Of the six countries comprising Central America’s electrical interconnection system , Costa Rica is the least advanced in terms of the work needed to complete its connection. When this project is ready, electricity distribution companies will be able to buy energy at a regional level and generation companies will be able to sell to any country requiring it.
The Regional Electricity Market is made possible by Central America’s Electrical Interconnection system, which has led to the construction of a 1,800 km power grid network across Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. So far the infrastructure required is 93% complete.
